ANFA

The Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture (ANFA) took shape in 2002 in San Diego (California) as a Legacy Project of the National American Institute of Architects (AIA) Convention and was formalized as a non-profit organization in 2003, under the guidance of the founding President John Paul Eberhard. ANFA’s mission is to promote and advance knowledge that links neuroscience research to a growing understanding of human responses to the built environment. ANFA benefits from the expanding body of research that has evolved within the neuroscience community in the last three decades, and the promise of even more in the years to come.

Some observers have characterized what is happening in neuroscience as the most exciting frontier of human knowledge since the Renaissance. All humanity stands to benefit from this research in countless ways still to be determined. The profession of architecture has become a partner in developing the application of this knowledge base to increase its ability to be of service to society.

ANFA ITALY CHAPTER

OUR BRANCh, MILAN (IT)

We are a non-profit research, dissemination, and networking project born at the end of 2023 to promote the ANFA mission within the Italian community, engaging students, scholars, educators, and practitioners. Our goal is to translate and apply science-informed and evidence-driven principles to the design process at any scale (interior, architecture, urban, and landscape design). Five concepts inspire our approach to what is now commonly called “neuroarchitecture”: embodiment, affect, atmosphere, attunement, and memory.

The ANFA Italy Chapter has access to several local multidisciplinary resources since its Honorary Committee embraces experts from architecture, design, philosophy, cognitive science, and economics. The chapter's various activities are also organized with the support of an Project Team of early-career professionals and researchers in the field who help coordinate and advance the chapter's initiatives. Currently, the Milan-based POLI.design of Politecnico di Milano serves as our academic partner.

We invite everyone to join our project without foreseeing any fee or eligibility criteria. Subscribe to our mailing list for announcements, events, and calls for projects. Our purpose is to organize a symposium in Italy working as a disciplinary, temporal, and geographical integration to the chief biennial ANFA Conference in San Diego: disciplinary since it will focus primarily on design approaches, proposals, and results; temporal since it will take place in the gap year; and geographical since it will offer a branch targeted to the European scientific community. Besides English required for all the ANFA-related interactions, our initiatives will be developed and disseminated also in Italian.
